About Elections in America
American elections fill the news for months, cost millions of dollars, and affect people in this country and around the world. Elections in America teaches students about voting, elections, and the political process, both now and throughout America’s history. Students also study Bible teachings related to government such as integrity, truth, honor, and humility.
Elections in America is divided into three parts. In Part One, "Voting in America," students learn about the voting process, the history of suffrage for various subgroups in America, and the Electoral College. In Part Two, "American Politics," they learn about political parties, primaries, and conventions. Students explore campaigning, the history of American political campaigns, and how the media has reported campaigns and elections. In Part Three, "A History of American Elections," students begin in 1788 and follow a timeline of all Federal elections through the present. Topics discussed include the major presidential candidates, which party controlled the House of Representatives and the Senate, important legislation passed by Congress, and significant historical events.
The Elections in America Curriculum Package includes two books -- a lesson book and a student workbook, with an answer key booklet. The lesson book has 75 lessons. The lessons in the "Voting in America" and "American Politics" sections are one to two pages long. The lessons in the "A History of American Elections" section are usually three pages long, though some are four pages in length. The lesson book includes 200 historical pictures and graphics, including campaign posters, election maps, political cartoons, and other fascinating portrayals of America's political past. The Student Activity Book has review questions and activities related to the lessons.
Most students can read a lesson in the lesson book and complete the corresponding page in the student activity book in about 15-30 minutes. The lesson book also has ideas for further reading and for family activities. We recommend one student activity book per student. Children can share the lesson book.
