If Al Gore Was President (08-15-2002)
Last week Al Gore published an article in the New York Times criticizing President Bush and his policies. Gore continued his musings about a perceived struggle between the forgotten middle class and the powerful forces of greed. Two years ago, George Bush and Al Gore were spending much time and money trying to explain to American voters how they would do this or do that if they were elected President. When election day came, the American voters gave them each about the same number of votes. George Bush finally emerged as the winner after an extended battle over little pieces of paper in Florida. Now that we've had a year and a half with Mr. Bush as our Chief Executive, I wonder how things might be different if Al Gore was President...
- If Al Gore was President, he might appoint pro-sodomy and pro-abortion people to high government positions.
- If Al Gore was President, he might participate in questionable events at pagan temples.
- If Al Gore was President, he might corrupt American schools even more by sending them more Federal funds and regulations.
- If Al Gore was President, he might station your sons and daughters around the world to fight someone else's sons and daughters.
- If Al Gore was President, he might discourage Israel's fight against terrorism while maintaining his own fight against terrorism.
- If Al Gore was President, he might increase federal police powers in the name of national security.
- If Al Gore was President, he might approve campaign finance "reform" that gives extra advantages to incumbents.
- If Al Gore was President, he might favor giving amnesty to illegal aliens.
- If Al Gore was President, he might encourage Congress to send more of your money to other countries in the form of foreign aid.
Of course, Al Gore is not President. George Bush is President. The strange thing is that George Bush is actually doing all of these things that Al Gore might have done, the things that "conservatives" complain about when "liberals" do them. People encouraged me to vote for George Bush because they said he'd be better than Al Gore. Is this better?
I pray for Mr. Bush often. I pray that God would give him wisdom and courage to make righteous decisions. I know he has the capability to do so, and I think he even has the desire to some degree. I want to support my country and I want to honor those in authority over me. I cannot be satisfied, though, when someone in his high position disregards the Constitution of the United States that he promised to defend and the holy Bible that he professes to believe.
In the elections this year for U.S. Congress, I don't particularly want to vote for people who will support the agenda of President Bush. We need representatives who are bound to principle rather than party. We need leaders who will work to protect and restore the valuable provisions of our Constitution. If Al Gore was President, I'd probably be disappointed with his leadership. George Bush is President, and I am disappointed.
