Lesser Evil or Greater Good? (09-09-2000)
I drew near to fury on Wednesday night as I parked our van for Bible class. In the parking lot at the church building, I saw two -- count them! -- two Gore/Lieberman 2000 bumper stickers. One of them was conveniently placed below a fish outline on the back of a pickup truck. Consider the extreme paradox of a symbol of anti-life socialism beside the dear symbol of Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior! What have we become?
In the "black-and-white" field of two-party politics, one may feel pressured to vote for the "lesser of two evils". Socialist liberals won't vote for Nader because Bush might be elected. Conservative-types won't vote for Buchanan because Gore might be elected. What's a principled voter to do?
To all those who desire responsible liberty under God, I loosely paraphrase George Washington: If to please the Republicans, we vote for that which we ourselves disbelieve, how may we then afterward defend our work? Our job is to raise a standard to which the wise and honest may repair, recognizing that the event is in the hands of God.
Though I agree with Harry Browne on many issues, including gun (un)control and ending the federal "War on Drugs", I cannot support the Libertarian platform, which recognizes man as sovereign.
Instead, I support Howard Phillips of the Constitution Party, which recognizes God as sovereign. After watching the Constitution Party National Committee Meeting, of which C-SPAN aired portions last Sunday, I am more convinced that Howard Phillips is raising a standard to which the wise and honest may and should repair. To obtain victory, first we must seek it. I support Howard Phillips for President and Curtis Frazier for Vice President, and I encourage my brethren to spend their vote wisely in November.
