The Shop Around the Corner
(1940)

Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan take the lead in this romantic comedy. It is set in a department store in Budapest, Hungary (for some reason). A cast of colorful characters provides lots of laughs.

An adulterous affair between one of the employees and the wife of the owner leads to conflict, but it does not receive explicit focus. A quick kiss at the end is the only visual objection I have, and one scene includes an implied reference to back-room hanky panky at another store. Some of the humor is biting, too.

The setting and story are unusual, but this film shows in a cute way the value of working together and appreciating people for who they are.
